February 16, 2012 - Dr. Tom Luthy Jr.
President's Day Special
The Funeral of
President Lincoln
Rotarian Dr. Tom Luthy Jr. presented a program on the
funeral of President Lincoln.
Dr. Luthy stated that President
Lincoln was probably the most
influencial president in our
history. The assasination took
place on April 14, 1865, only
five days after Lee surrendered
at Appomattox on April 9th.
Dr. Luthy detailed the
assasination of Lincoln and
the attempts on the lives of
others in the Lincoln
administration. President
Lincoln died on the morning
of April 15th. After lying in state in Washington D. C.,
his body was taken by funeral train 1700 miles through
Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, Columbus,
Chicago, and then finally to Springfield, Illinois. President
Lincoln's burial was at noon on May 3, 1865 in Oak Ridge
Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.

Natural Resource Manager
Bennett Spring State Park
J. D. Muschany was named theNatural Resource Manager of
Bennett Spring State Park in 1997.
He shared a video on the Missouri
State Park System with Rotarians
and then shared some stats about
Bennett Spring. Bennett Spring
was established as a state park in
1924. The spring produces 800
gallons of water per second or
1,000,000 gallons per day. The park
has 12 full-time employees and
40 to 50 part-time employees. The
economic impact to our area is
about $23 million per year. The
average stay of campers in the park is 4.3 days, one of the
highest in the state park system. The park has 195 camp
sites, 22 motel rooms and three cabins. 134,639 trout tags
were sold in the park last year.

MSU Head Baseball Coach
Keith Guttin previewed the2012 MSU baseball season
for the Lebanon Rotarians.
MSU is ranked 31st in the
nation and is the pre-season
favorite in the Missouri Valley
Conference. This year MSU
has seven returning players
and nine games with Big 12
Conference Teams. MSU has seen 18 of their players go
on to play professional ball, and six go to the major league.

Sam Schneider has been fire
chief in Lebanon since 2001.
The stats that he shared with
Rotary members included:
Lebanon has 18 full-time
firemen and 6 part-time firemen,
with a fleet of ten vehicles
housed in two firestations, the
fire department averages 5.44
calls per day, with 65% listed as
EMS calls and 7% fire calls.
Last year the firemen attended
224 classes with 1336 hours of
training. The department
conducts child safety inspections,
provides free smoke detectors for individuals living within
the city limits, and conducts school tours during the year.

LHS graduate Justin Britt started as left tackle on the MU Tigers Football team in 2011. Justin told the Rotarians that playing for the MU Tigers was a "dream come true". He shared his experieces playing in bowl games and his thoughts about the university moving to the Southeast Conference for the 2012 season.

Mercy Hospital Center
for Innovative Care
Dr. Tom Hale shared with Rotary members St. Johns/ Mercy Hospital's new innovations in patient care, including the virtural care of e-ICU. This program allows video conferencing with a network of hospitals. An ICU room in Lebanon has the capability to have a direct video link to an ICU center in St. Louis, or a number of other hospitals and resource centers. This allows doctors and nurses to have second opinion resources available 24/7. The morning before our program, two stroke patients at Lebanon were able to use doctor resources from the St. Louis Hospital.

Dick Hobbs invited all Rotarians to participate in the
program for eighth grade area students February -
April, 2012. Dick mentioned that this year's program
will be more interactive and using media that students
are more accustomed to.

for ten years and a state
senator for four years before
becoming Missouri State
Attorney General. He shared
with Rotarians that he
grew up in St. Louis where
his father was a sports
writer for the St. Louis Globe-
Democrat. His father had a
huge influence on Chris'
life and taught him that he
should follow his dreams.
As Attorney General he has
learned that the experience of "gray hair" is important,
and to follow a careful and conservative attitude in
his positon.

goals that he has set for his
team include: Do not allow
your man to get to the basket;
get turnovers and loose balls;
and get better everyday. Cole

players and the LHS men's basketball schedule with
Rotarians.

Director, LHS Bands
Keith Ruether has been directorof LHS Bands for 12 years for
grades 6 - 12. He shared with
the Rotarians that the fall
marching season is over and
concert season is about to begin.
During the marching season the
band competed at Parkview,
Broken Arrow, OK., and Carthage.
The band will perform at Disney
World in early June. There are
145 members in the marching
band; these students will play in
two concert bands, and there is a
pep band for basketball games. The band had 26
members in the District 9, All District Band this year.

Cliff Smart, Interim Presidentof Missouri State University,
reminded Rotarians of the
close relationship between
MSU and Lebanon alumni.
He outlined the new Pharmacy
Program to be implemented
in the fall of 2014. He also
discussed the "Downtown"
campus which includes the
Jordan Valley Center, the
Plaster Center, and the Brick
City Center. Rotarians also
learned that all of the MSU
residence halls were renovated
last summer, and the new student recreation center
will be opened in March 2012.

Drury University Author
Dr. Resa Willis is an English Professor at Drury University.
She has published extensively on Mark Twain, and her book, Mark and Livy: The Love Story of Mark Twain and the Woman Who Almost Tamed Him (Atheneum, 1992) was nominated for the PEN Award for biography. She is also the author of FDR and Lucy: Lovers and Friends, a book exploring FDR's relationship with Lucy Rutherfurd and its effect on his marriage to Eleanor Roosevelt. Dr. Willis shared two excerpts from her books and answered questions from Rotarians concerning different aspects of her books and the characters in the books. She did encourage each Rotarian to keep a personal journal for their families' future reference.

Entertainment Corp.
Pete Herschend, founder of Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation, shared with Rotarians that his company started in the early 1960's in Brason, Missouri. Today the company owns 26 properties in 10 states, including the Branson attractions of Silver Dollar City, the Showboat Branson Bell, The Ducks, and Dixie Stampede. Mr. Herschend has also served on the Missouri State Board of Eduction for the past 20 years. He shared the Board's "Top 10 in 2020" goals with Rotarians stating that Missouri public schools need to rank in the top 10 states in the nation in all academic core areas by the year 2020.

Ron Lankford, Deputy Commission of DESE shared with Rotarians that the goal of DESE is that Missouri children be in the top ten educated students in the U.S by 2020. Today our students rank 24th in math, 16th in reading and 12th in science. Specific goals of DESE include: every child needs to enter kindergarten ready to learn, every child must be college and career ready, and we must have quality teachers. He said that there is a positive correlation between economic success and the quality of education of a nation. It is important for the United States to continue to improve it's educational system.

Presiding Commissioner
Danny Rhoades, Presiding Commissioner of Laclede County, spoke with the Rotarians concerning some of the challenges of the county government. He stated that the county is in good financial shape because the elected officials make the best of what funds are budgeted to each of them. He mentioned the importance of the County Development Sales Tax which accounts for about 20% of the county's revenue. Danny also discussed the fact that the county was exploring the possiblity of placing a GeoThermo heating/cooling system in the court house. The system would cost about $3.4 million and could pay for itself in 15 years. The system could save the county several hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next 25 years.

Debbie Wikowsky, Ececutive Director of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce, addressed the Rotarians about the importance of the Chamber. She stated that the Chamber has 364 members, and on September 17th sponsored an area Business Expo at the Civic Center which included 90 local businesses. Debbie stated that the two greatest challenges facing the Chamber in promoting the community are the economy and local politics. One negative aspect of the Chamber this year was the discontinuing of Hillbilly Days. She did say that the Chamber is discussing another possible event for the park, maybe before Memorial day or after Labor day. An additional Chamber activity is scheuled for June 8 and 9 for next year.

President & CEO of SRC
Jack Stack, President and CEO of SRC addressed the Rotarians stating that in 1983, he and 12 of his business partners "scraped together $100,000 and borrowed another $9 million to buy a failing division of International Harvester in Springfield, Mo". This became Springfield Remanufacturing Corporation (SRC) which specializes in remanufacturing products for agriculture, industrial, construction, truck, marine and automotive markets. Today SRC is an employee-owned business employing 1200 workers. SRC used an unique approach to establish the company called Open-Book Management. "This approach is based on a simple, yet powerful belief; 'When employees think, act and feel like owners… everybody wins.' "

for 7 years. He gave the
Rotarians a look at this year's

Coach Lusk's rules are
real simple for his players:
be on time, go to class
everyday, give your best effort
and act right. He expects this
of his players on and off the
court; in and out of all of their classrooms. He hopes to have a great season this year.
September 1, 2011 - Chris Heard
Interim City Administrator
Chris Heard, Lebanon's interim city administrator, spoke to Rotary concerning what he see as Lebanon's future needs. He stated that the city needs to get back to basics of using the good untility system, a strong internal structure, and good sales tax receipts to get things done in the city. He stated that the city needs to establish a master plan and use a citizens' survey to help complete that master plan. Chris update the Rotaians on the Elm Street Project and the park improvements.

Ameren Missouri
Rick Eastman is the Legislative Represenative of Ameren-Missouri. Ameren- Missouri is the state's largest utility company, supplying electricity to many of the rural electric cooperatives in Missouri. The presentation focused on showing the need for additional generation of electricity. Presently Ameren runs the Callaway Nuclear Plant. Mr. Eastman stressed the need of an additional nuclear plant to address Missouri's future demands for electricity.

the goal of the team is to bring
home a state championship, and he thanked the community forall of their great support for the team.
August 11, 2011 - Dr. Hal Higdon
President of OTC
Dr. Hal Higdon shared infor- mation with the Lebanon Rotarians about the expansion of the OTC campus in Lebanon. OTC has spent $4 million to upgrade the donated facility in Lebanon to produce a state-of-the-art facility for students at the Lebanon Campus. OTC has grown from 1,300 students in 1991 to almost 14,500 this fall semester, and has become a regional college with four satellite campuses. The Lebanon campus has 550 students this fall, and the new facility will be able to house up to 1,200 students.

ministry produces multi-
colored soccer balls and
basketballs to take on mission trips to foreign nations.The colors on the balls are used to explain Christianity in a simple, easy to understand way. The balls have been distributed throughout the world, but they have been used primarily in third-world countries such as Nicaragua.

Rita Esterly, Rotary District Governor of District 6080, spoke with the Lebanon Rotarians about the positive reaction for change. She stated that our club is the best, but challenged us to find ways to make it better! Governor Rita shared the three year Rotary strategic plan which includes: 1. Support and strengthen club change, 2. Increase public image, and 3. Increase humanitarian services. She also shared with the Rotarians about the Partnership Panama Project. She stated that as a Rotary Club we need to shine brightly so that the world may receive the light.

Southern Missouri
Bear Facts
Kevin Hedgepath is a Missouri black bear expert for the Missouri Department of Conservation. He is presently working on the Bear Project for the Department of Conservation. There are about 7,000 bears in the area of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. He told the Rotarians that many of the black bears of southern Missouri came from the Arkansas bears that had been introduced to that state in 1957. The smaller bears of southwest Missouri (around the Seymore area) may be native to Missouri. Since 2010 the Bear Project has placed GPS collars on the bears to track their territories and their habits. An interesting fact he mentioned was that they trap the bears in snares and barrel traps by using donuts and other pastries.
June 16, 2011 - MODOT Road Funding
Update:
Joe Rickman from MODOT addressed the Rotarians
concerning MODOT funding
reductions. MODOT is
reorganizing from 10 district
offices to 7 district offices.
Laclede County will now be
a part of the Jefferson City
District office rather than the
Springfield District office.
Also, 131 physical locations
will be closed to save about
$600,000 in the state budget.
A total of 1,200 positions will
reduced in the MODOT work
force. Mr. Rickman also
reviewed all of the area projects for Laclede County for
the current year.
June 9, 2011 - Detroit Tool Metal Products
Mark Cornlison, Chief Financial Officer of Detroit Tool Metal Products (above left) discussed with the Lebanon Rotarians the planned expansion of the company. Presently, the company has 330,000 square feet of manufacturing and assmbley area, and the average annual salary is $44,000 for their employees. The planned expansion will employ an additional 200 workers. Economic Development Director Rotarian Ben Jones (above right) discussed the grant writing process and the planning of the financial aspects of the project needed to bring about the planned expansion.

Golf and Fitness
Steve Kuney shared with Lebanon Rotarians that Great Life Golf and Fitness will be working with the Lebanon Country Club by establishing a new state-of-the-arts fitness center in what used to be the Club's restaurant. He said the plan is for Great Life and Golf to act as a franchise for the Lebanon Country Club. This should allow for more growth for the Country Club.

Battle Lab -
Mentoring Program:
Major Scott Werkmeister and SFC Darius Baca of the U. S. Maneuver Suppport Battle Lab from Fort Wood discussed and demonstrated the need and uses of robots in battle situations to Lebanon Rotarians and their student guests from the mentoring program. The military hopes to have 25% of combat operations carried out by robots within five years. Students were allowed to try their hand at operating the robot.

Civil War Skirmish Assoc.
Dwaine Hillhouse of the Civil War Skirmish Association tells Rotarians about the local Civil War history and introduces them to the local Civil War Skirmish Assoc. He also had a display of weapons used in the Civil War including a .58 caliber rifle used during the conflict.

Cackle Hatchery
Jeff Smith is a third generation co-owner of Cackle Hatchery of Lebanon. This year is the 75th
anniversary of the founding of the hatchery. It is classified as a hobby farm hatchery and is the third largest in the United States, offering 187 varieties
of poultry. The hatchery produces about 170,000 birds per week; one-half retail sales and one-half wholesale sales. It uses the U. S. Postal Service for all of its mail orders. The hatchery employees 14 fulltime employees, with a total of 55 employees.

U. S. Representative
U. S. Representative Vicky Hartzler addressed Lebanon Rotarians concerning the national debt. She explained that the House has been working with the Senate on the present budget to reduce the debt and will continue to attempt to reduce the debt in the 2012 budget. Of the $13 trillion deficit, 47% of the debt of the United States is owned by other countries (Of the 47% - 29%, China & 20%, Japan). Representative Hartzler said that it is the goal of the U. S. House to address future aspects of the Social Securty, Medicare and Medicaid programs.

"Honor Flights"
Mike Beck works with the "Honor Flight" program which sponsors the transporting of World War II veterans and their "Guardians" to the World War II Memorial and other commemorative sites in Washington D. C. Mr. Beck explained the meaning of the different aspects of the WW II Memorial and described the other aspects of the day long trip for the veterans, which includes a "mail call" for each of the veterans on their way home.

SHAPES Mentoring
Rev. Jeff Dorn works with SHAPES Mentoring Program which is a mentoring program for children whose parents are in prison. The program was established in 2004 and serves 90 children in southwest Missouri. The program is funded by a federal grant. Mentees spend about one hour per week with the children they mentor.

Reintroducing Elk into Missouri
Conservation Agent Walt Hutton shared with Rotarians the process of reintroducing elk into Missouri. The elk will be transported from Kentucky after a 90 day time of quarantine to test for diseases. The first phase will include 150 elk being placed in Carter, Shannon and Reynolds Counties, where 93% of the land is owned by the state or federal governments. The goal is to develop a population of 500 elk in this area.

Scott Bailes, Manager of Market Development, of the Springfield Cardinal Baseball Team discussed with the Rotarians how he became a major league baseball pitcher. He played baseball for MSU and tried out for the minor league Pittsburg Pirates. He made it to the AA program and ended up playing major league baseball with the Cleveland Indians, California Angles and Texas Rangers for 10 years. Scott and Zach Teisher, handed out 2011 schedules for the Cardinals. They also shared with us how we could purchase tickets and season passes for Cardinal Baseball games for the 2011 season.

Springfield S. E. Rotary
"Don't Meth With Us"
Jerry Morgan presented Springfield S.E. Rotary's "Don't Meth With Us" program. The program targets 5th graders in the Springfield schools by presenting information about Meth and its negative impact upon those who use the drug. The program is extremely successful in Farmington, N.M. in reducing the use of Meth among young people. The S. E. Rotary Club began presenting the program in November and will continue their presentations in all Springfield 5th grade classrooms this spring.

21st Century Agriculture
Doug Mertens works with the Monsanto Company in the area of agriculture. He shared with the Rotarians the importance of agri-culture in the products we use daily. Today the United States is producing more food through bio-technology on less land, using less fuel and less labor.

LHS Football Coach Will Christian and the LHS All Academic Football Team shared about their successes during the 2010 season with the Lebanon Rotary Club. Coach Christian, voted conference and district "Coach of the Year", stated that the success of the football season rested upon the quality of players on the team.

Bennett Springs Hatchery
Mike Mitchell is the manager of the Bennett Springs Hatchery Fish Farm. He shared with Rotarians pictures and descriptions of the new hatchery building and raceways being constructed at Bennett Springs. Mike explained that the spawning of trout is a two year process. The hatchery provides trout to urban lakes in Kansas City and St. Louis during the fall and winter months.

Wrinkle
Laclede County Sheriff Richard Wrinkle addressed the Lebanon Rotary Club concerning the sheriff's department. Sheriff Wrinkle compared the sheriff's department of the 1970's with the department of today. In 1973 the department employed three employees. Today it employs 66. Each deputy had to supply his own car, weapon, and even handcuffs in 1973. Today all those items are issued. In 1973 the jail had 16 beds, today it has 106 beds. He explained the difficulties in scheduling different prisoners in different pods because of gender and their ability to get along with one another. Sheriff Wrinkle also explained about the advancement in technology in today's sheriff's department.

Veteran's Day Remembrance
SFC Caldwell, a drill sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, shared with Rotarians information concerning the different aspects of basic training at Ft. Wood. He stated that most of the recruits at Ft. Wood come from California and Texas. He also stated that the greatest skill learned in basic training is team work. SFC Caldwell also modeled the Army's new dress uniform.

Organ/Tissue Donation
Reverend Linda Rodden, of St. John's Hospital spoke with Rotarians concerning the donation of organs and tissues. She stated that 100,000 people are waiting for these donations and 17 die everyday. She stressed the importance of every family to know the wishes of their family members, and legally the hopital staff must speak with family members concerning the donations of organs and tissues.

Brad Boswell of the Independent Stave Company addressed the Lebanon Rotarians about the diversity, the innovation in technology, and the world-wide growth of the Lebanon based company. Brad, a 4th generation cooper, discussed the important reasons why they use white oak in producing their barrels, and why the oak barrels are important factors in the maturation of whiskey and wine.

The Rotary Group Exchange Program is sponsored by The Rotary Foundation. The Program is a cultural, educational and vocational exchange for young professional and business people. This team is sponsored by the Australian Rotary District 9640 consisting of the team leader, Rotarian Gary Scuddamore, who operates a cattle and sheep operation; and team members: Michael Froggatt, a police detective; Jenny Poolman, a senior police constable; Aaron Wise, a businessman; and Ryan Golder, a businessman. All of the members of the team live in the border area of Queensland and New South Wales. The Australian Team shared some of their culture and vocational experiences with the Lebanon Rotarians.

Dr. James E. Cofer, Sr. assumed his position as the tenth president of Missouri State University on August 1, 2010.
He has spent 30 years in higher education with a bachelor's degree in business, a master's in business administration, and a doctorate degree in education.
Dr. Cofer shared his adminstrative style which is primarily meeting with faculty and staff in group discussions prior to making any decission. He is in the process of formulating MSU's Long Range Plan which will guide the university through 2016. He feels that the 23,000 students who are a part of the MSU system select courses to take based upon who teaches the course and how it is taught. Dr. Cofer and his wife Deborah presently reside in SunVilla Tower Dormatory on the Missouri State University Campus in order to be more in touch with students and their concerns and needs.

Head Men's Basketball Coach
University of Central Missouri
Coach Kim Anderson is the Head Men's Basketball Coach at University of Central Missouri. He has coached the Mules for the past 8 seasons. During the 2009-10 season his team recorded a 27 - 4 win/loss record and were MIAA Champs. Coach Anderson stated that one of the greatest challenges of a Division II school was the recruiting of quality players. His coaching staff looks at high school players, normally April recruiting, Junior College transfers, and Division I transfers as possible players. The Mules are recognized as have the 4th best attendance in Division II basketball. Coach Anderson played college ball in the mid 1970's at the University of Missouri under Coach Norm Stewart.

Smile for Lifetime
Dr. Ross Stryker addressed Lebanon Rotarians concerning the Smile for a Lifetime Program. The program selects 8 to 10 young people per year in need of orthodontic care who face financial challenges or other special situations. Students must complete an application process to be accepted. Dr. Stryker showed a number of example of students before and after the the orthodontic care. The change in the students attitude and self concept is amazing.

Laclede Literacy
Council
Carl Davidson works with the Laclede Literacy Council. He shared with the Rotarians that the Literacy Council has many programs including: a jail program, life skills & reading programs, a GED program, a citizenshp program, and an English As A Second Language program. 73 volunteers served 183 individuals from elementary age to 50 years of age last year. The annual budget for the Council is $30,000. According to Mr. Davidson, the Literacy Council is always in need of volunteer tutors and funding. 90% of the material is free to the students involved in the programs.

Professor Jerry Hoover, Director of Bands at Missouri State Univesity, addressed Rotarians and 16 senior LHS band students about the MSU Band Program and presented Ryan Norris the 2010 Jerry Hoover Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is funded by the Jerry Hoover Scholarship Committee, representing LHS band alumni who were students during Jerry Hoover's tenure as band director at Lebanon in the 1960's.

Pictured above: Bev Thompson, safety instructor with the Red Cross, watches Rotarian John Carr as he uses the automated external defibillator (AED). Bev showed a short video on the use of the AED and showed the Rotarians how to use the AED. This was an important program because the Wallace Building now has an AED on location.

Wind Energy
Kevin Hopper of Associated Electric Coop spoke to the Lebanon Rotarians about wind energy. Associated Electric generates electricity for the electrical coops in the state of Missouri. The coop generates about 300 mega watts of wind power from their wind farm in north Missouri. Overall, Missouri is not a good area for wind energy. Kevin said the greatest challenge in wind energy is to transmit the energy from where it is produced to where it is needed in a timely manner. Most of the wind energy is produced in the coastal areas states and in an area from Texas up through the mountain states.

District Governor, Raymond Plue of Columbia, MO addressed the Lebanon Rotary Club. He encouraged the Rotarians to attend the District meeting at Tan-Tar-A in October and the International Conference at New Orleans, LA in May, 2011. He outlined three important aspects of Rotary: Polio eradication (cases of polio in Pakistan, Afganistan, India and Nigeria are in the single digits), membership, and the Rotary Foundation.

Dan Crain of the Missouri Highway Patrol addressed the Rotarians concerning automobile accidents. He shared the following facts about driving accidents: Most accidents occur within 5 miles of a person's home and three-fouths of fatal car crashes occur on rural highways. The causes of traffic accidents are: 1. distracted drivers 2. speeding 3. alcohol and drugs. He then demonstrated the Highway Patrol's seatbelt safety vehicle.

Radios.
Alva Hazell gave a presentation on Amateur HAM Radios. He shared the following facts about HAM Radios: The HAM radio was created in 1911, HAM radios are utilized when a community experiences disaster, and the radios help rebuild infrastructure and help in locating people who are lost or need emergency personnel. Bill Wheeler, Lebanon Rotary President, is Alva's HAM mentor and is one of the most talented HAM radio operators in the country.

Share the Fair
Russ Phelps is chairman of Share The Fair. This program allows individuals to purchase animals shown in the fair and donate them to the Share The Fair Program. The animal's meat is processed and donated to feed individuals in need in the community. Last year 13 lambs, 5 hogs, and 2 steers were donated. Last year it is estimated that over 3,900 persons would have been fed at least one meal.

Dan Lennon is Vice President of Marketing, Branson Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Singing Lennon Brothers who have performed at the Welk Theater since 1994. He stated that last year over 7.8 million people visited Branson. 60% of those visitors traveled over 300 miles. The Branson Chamber and the Convention & Visitor Bureau have a budget of over $7 million and are funded from the City of Branson and a retail tax.

Mark Spangler, Library Museum Assistant, shared with the Lebanon Rotarians the new aspects of the Route 66 Museum. The Lebanon Rotary Club donated $66,000 to help establish the Museum located in the Lebanon/ Laclede County Library. Mark stated that you would be surprised at the number of individuals who visit the museum each year.

Mike Alley is the Public Affairs Officer at Fort Leonard Wood. He explained to Rotarians that Fort Leonard Wood is one of the largest training centers in the U. S., training 94,000 initial trainees per year. Other training facitlities include the Army Engineer School, the Military Police School, and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School. He explained that for every 15 retirees at Fort Leaonard Wood, 12 remain in this area to live.

Brian feels that the worst of the economic times are behind us.

Reservoir Undate
Warren Witt, Hydro Operations Manager for AmerenUE addressed the Lebanon Rotary Club concerning the restoration of the Taum Sauk water reservoir. The Taum Sauk reservoir is built on top of a mountain in Reynolds County, Missouri, and was breached in 2005. It has taken two years to rebuild the mile long reservoir. The water from the reservior goes through the power plant to produce electricity during the day and is pumped back up to the reservoir during the night. The power plant produces enough electricity for about 44,000 homes.

Rotarian Ellen Martin discussed information regarding one of her passions, bird watching, with her fellow Rotarians. She explained that bird watching can be an inexpensive hobby focusing on the sight and sounds of as many as 225 species of birds in Laclede County. She introduced Lester Pannell as an expert bird watcher in Laclede County. Mr. Pannell completes the migratory bird count for Laclede County each year.

The Lebanon Home Schoolers' Choir entertains the Lebanon Rotary Club's members. The choir is directed by Krista Smith and includes students in the Lebanon area, Springfield, and St. Louis. The Choir rehearses twice a month.

Hope
Ron Wagner of Covoy of Hope addressed Lebanon Rotarians concerning the ongoing humanitarian aid projects of the Covoy of Hope around the world. He discussed the Haiti aid project in detail, stating that the Convoy of Hope is feeding over 25,000 people per day. Last year along the Convoy of Hope helped 5.6 million people in 33 countries and raised $48 million.

Director of the YMCA
Corey Johnson, Director of the new Lebanon YMCA, addressed the Rotarians concerning the YMCA's history and the improve-ments made to the Civic Center to house the YMCA, such as a the new entry area, a new heater for the indoor pool (84 degree water), a new workout/weight room area, and the Kids Zone. Corey also discussed the YMCA's staff, membership, and all of the new programs for the Lebanon YMCA. The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, February 26th at 4:00 p.m., and the grand opening will be Saturday, February 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Speech therapist, Emily Revelle, addressed Rotarians concerning Parkinson's Disease and a treatment for the disease. She explained what brings about the onset of Parkinson's Disease, the symptoms, speech characteristics, and types of Parkinson's. Emily is a speech theapist certified in "Lee Silverman Voice Treatment". She explained how this treatment is used to help Parkinson's patients.

Rotarian Stacy Segabarth discussed with her fellow Rotarians why and how she and Kim Prud'homme started Two Hearts for Hope. Mike Alden, Mizzou Athletic Director, and Mike Kelly, "Voice of the Tigers", addressed Lebanon Rotarians concerning the athletic department of the University of Missouri. Mike Alden shared the fact that the University of Missouri atheletes' academic performance is number five in the nation and number one in the Big 12 Conference. They also shared the importance of athletics in the recruitment of all students to the university. The main goals of the University of Missouri and the Big 12 Conference center around: 1. Gaining greater exposure and revenue from additonal television contracts. 2. Centralizing championship games for more consistency. 3. Continue to emphasize academic performance and the importance of academic performance perception.
January 14, 2010 - Lebanon High School Robotics Team
Ms. Schwartsman, one of the sponsors of the LHS Robotics Team, addressed the Rotarians about what the Robotics Team does, its past accomplishments, and what the team must do to compete with other teams in the state and national contests. The LHS Robotics team is made up of 20 students from Lebanon High School. Most of the students on the team are freshmen and sophomores. This year the team was able to attend the national competition of robotics at Texas A & M University. Although the team did not finish in the top ten, Ms. Schwartsman stated that they learned a great deal through their experiences. Other pictures include the actual robot and the team members.

Sandy Shockely and Sue Watson from the Salvation Army addressed the Rotarians giving us background information concerning the Salvation Army, ways the Salvation Army helps the community of Lebanon, and the needs of the local Salvation Army chapter. Sue Watson shared with the Rotarians that the Salvation Army helps local residents with food, clothing, lodging, utilities, meals, and with spiritual needs such as prayer and counseling. Short term needs for the organization mentioned by Sandy Shockely would include bell ringers for the next week and donations for the next year. The collected donation for this next year is just over $20,000. The goal is to raise $30,000 by Christmas. Long term goals include gaining access to a larger building and starting a feeding program in Lebanon.

John Carr's Trip to Africa
Rotarian John Carr shared with fellow Rotarians about his travels to Cotonou, Benin in Africa from November 4 to November 11, 2009. John was the club's ambassador assisting the Rotary International in its goal to help eradicate polio from the world. He shared information and showed pictures from Benin, Africa as he assisted in giving the polio vaccinations.

Expansion
Rotarian Ben Jones, CEO of the American Heartland Economic Parnership in Lebanon, outlined the Detroit Tool Metal Products Expansion. This expansion is housed in the Lebanon Industrial Park and produces metal parts for large machinery and trucks. At present, Detroit Tool has added about 40 new technical jobs, and when in full production may employ as many as 125 new employees with a yearly payroll of $4.5 to $6 million.

Back by popular demand, Rotarian Nick Mebruer spoke to fellow Rotarians about the Rotary Foundation. He shared the fact that the Rotary International Foundation spends millions of dollars around the world to help people in need. One example being the Polio vaccinations which are provided to children in third world countries. He also shared the importance of the Sustaining Member Funds which supports the Rotary Foundation.

Frank Rhinehart is a member of the Patriot Guard Riders which is an organization of motorcyclists who honor fallen patriots, veterans, by attending their funeral service as invited guests of the family. He shared with Rotarians that the objectives of the organization are (1) to show sincere respect for the fallen hero, their family and community, and (2) to shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protest group.

"Choices Program"
Rotarian Dick Hobbs explained the "Choices Program" to the Lebanon Rotarians. The program is presented to 8th graders and focuses on self discipline and students making good choices. Above, Dick demonstrates one of the activities with his "students", Rotarians Ginger Johnson, Brad Brown, and Dalton Wright. The Lebanon Rotary Club will begin presenting the program in area schools this spring.

John Carr introduces the HBO Documentary Film "The Final Inch" by Irene Brodsky on the difficulty of eradicating polio from the world. Although 98% of the world's population is polio free, we continue to find polio in many third world counties. For example, there were 873 cases in India last year.
October 15, 2009 - Brett Mahan - Southern Misssouri Natural Gas
Rotarian Brett Mahan discussed the process of installing natural gas in Lebanon business and residential areas with Lebanon Rotarians. He reviewed the timeline which began with the election approving natural gas for the Lebanon area in 2007. Southern Missouri Gas Company put in place the distribution loops in 2008 and 2009, connecting them to the main feeder line from Marshfield in mid-September, 2009. The first hookup of St. Johns Hospital was completed on September 22, 2009, and he estimated it would take up to four years to complete every residential connection in a city as large as Lebanon.

Deborah McMahon is a consultant in planning and training for the management of crisis situations. She shared with the Lebanon Rotarians that she has trained personnel with the Department of Defense, law enforcement agencies in 23 states, rural Missouri law enforcement agencies, and the Lebanon Police Department in hostage negotiations and/or crisis situations training. Deborah loves her work and has a passion for assisting different organizations in looking for potential crisis situations.

Voice of Matyrs
Rev. James Hanks spoke with Rotarians about the Voice of Matyrs Program. This is a world-wide organization that goes into other countries to help families that are persecuted because of their faith. He showed Rotarians a map of those countries which are "Hostile Areas" and "Restricted Areas" in regards to allowing people in those countries to worship their faith freely. Rev. Hanks also shared stories of persecution from some of those countries.

James Owen, a lawyer and Film Critic of KY3 from Springfield spoke to the Lebanon Rotary Club membership.
He shared the different aspects of being a film critic and what he looks for in films. He stated that the film producer is the key to any film.

The Rev. Mark Struckhoff, Director of Council of Churches of the Ozarks, addressed Rotarians on the need to help the poor. The Council of Churches of the Ozarks supports a number of organizations to assist children, seniors and the disabled. These organizations include: Crosslines, Ambassadors for Children, Daybreak, Child Care Resources & Referral, and Child Care Food Program.

Federal Judge Greg Kays of the Western District Federal Court came back home to address the Lebanon Rotary Club. Judge Kays shared with Rotarians the duties and responsiblities of federal judges, the organization and authority of the federal court system of Missouri, the type of cases that come to the federal court system, and how federal courts are different from state courts. It was great to have Judge Kays back in Lebanon!

Rotarian Jim Kueny gives Lebanon Rotarians an update on the finanical markets. He compared the devastation of the Great Depression with today's present depressed economy, noting the positive aspects of today's economy. how do we use it?
Shelley Ruble from Outreach Consulting and Counseling Services (OCCS) shared information concerning SCRAM with Rotarians. SCRAM is an automated remote continuous alcohol testing system. SCRAM is designed for long-term monitoring of alcohol offenders, detecting alcohol comsumption 24 hours a day. SCRAM is an ankle braclet worn by a person which automatically collects, stores, and transfers information concerning a person's use of alcohol.

Hand Writing Analysis
Linda Cable is trained in handwriting analysis. She shared with the Rotarians that there are 125 identifiable human traits which can be determined from a person's handwriting. She looks at specific letters (t, i, f, d, k), the size of a person's handwriting, and the slant of the letters to determine personal traits. Indications of an individual's mental state, spiritual beliefs, personal intersts, daily living activities/ habits, and emotions may be found in his or her handwriting. She analyzed Rotarians Mike Davis', John Carr's, and Vic Slaughter's handwriting. A complete analysis may take up to seven hours to complete.

Police officer Wayne Merritt and his drug dog Reiko demonstrates how his dog finds drugs. Reiko is one of two dogs the Lebanon Police Department uses to locate drugs. Reiko and Officer Merritt attended 8 weeks of training to become a team. Reiko has a dual purpose; he is a drug dog, and a search and rescue dog.(Photos by Liz Spencer)

Attorney Dee Wampler addressed the Lebanon Rotary Club with an inspirational speech, The Myth of Separation of Church and State. He stated that, as a country, we still have God in our government and Constitution, giving Rotarians a historic prospective and examples of this fact. He challenged Rotarians to support political candidates who support our beliefs, and stated that we need to be sure good people remain in our governments.

Colonel Wade Dennis - Assistant Commandant, U.S. Army Military Police School, Fort Lenanrd Wood, Missouri
Colonel Wade Dennis spoke to Rotarians concerning the Joint Detention Center at Guantanomo Bay, Cuba. Colonel Dennis served as the past Brigade Commander of the Joint Detention Group at Guantanomo Bay. The detention center presently houses 250 detainees from the war in Afganistan,after housing as many as 700 during earlier years. Colonel Dennis showed pictures and discussed conditions in the detention center. He showed recreation, medical, and library facilities for the detainees. The Mission of the Joint Detention Center include: safe human care and custody, conducting intelligence collection, and law enforcement and war crimes investigations.
June 11, 2009 - Rotarian Dalton Wright
Dalton Wright discussed the Missouri Military Preparedness and Enhancement Commission (MMPEC) with Rotarians. The MMPEC is a bi-partisan commisssion consisting of nine members responsibile for making annual recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly for legislative and administrative action which is intended to increase support for the military in Missouri and improve the lives of military families in Missouri. He also discussed demographical statistics of individuals who served in the Viet Nam Conflict and some of his personal memories of his time in the military.

Missouri State University's President Dr. Michael Nietzel spoke to the Rotarians concerning the latest developments on the campus of MSU and the latest trends in higher education.

May 21, 2009 - Project "Leading the Way"
Rotarian Pat Bauer and Mark Hicks explain to Rotarians the new Project "Leading the Way" at Lebanon High School. Lebanon High School in conjunction with the Lebanon Career and Technical Center is implementing the new program next year. Project "Leading the Way" is a way to help our school give students the knowledge they need to excel in high-tech fields. In the four year high school program students would take four years of math, four years of science and 4 years of engineering classes. Much of the program is being paid for by a grant.
